California is Crazy About Criminals
In a recent New York Post article on California's crazy criminal justice policies, the NY Post editorial board strongly criticizes the California Board of Parole Hearings for advancing new regulations that could make it easier for thousands of violent felons, including some serving life without the possibility of parole, to win early release from prison. The board argues that this move is reckless, ideologically driven, and a direct threat to public safety, especially after years of soft-on-crime policies that have already strained the state’s criminal justice system. It highlights the Criminal Justice Legal Foundation’s lawsuit challenging the regulations, noting that the parole board appears to be overstepping its authority and undermining sentences handed down by judges and juries for the state’s most heinous crimes.

The editorial warns that freeing dangerous offenders will create more victims and erode public trust, especially at a time when Californians are already dealing with the consequences of previous reform experiments. It contrasts the parole board’s actions with the need for law and order, arguing that prison overcrowding should be addressed by building more capacity rather than releasing violent criminals early. The piece concludes that true public safety requires rejecting misplaced compassion for perpetrators in favor of protecting innocent Californians.
